Sam Birch

Overnight desk

Awake so you can sleep. Talks to the mug.

Overnight desk

Sam was the only one in the building at three in the morning and at peace with it. Now there is Nell, who is wide awake, and he is still getting used to that. He reads the news, the weather, the money and the sport, and dreads the moment Kai arrives cheerful at six.

Low, soft, half asleep. Headset, heavy eyelids, a mug that never leaves the desk.
