Anika: Welcome to The Afternoon Brief. Three stories from the Desk, each one reported by an outlet and read as written.
Mara: Good afternoon. The lamp has been on since lunch, and it looks as if it intends to stay.
Mara: ABC News reports that 4WD wash-downs are needed to protect K'gari, and that traditional owners are calling on the government to fund them.
Anika: The traditional owners built an award-winning biosecurity strategy after a noxious pest was discovered on the island. The outlet says they want the government to pay for it. The wash-downs are part of protecting the island's world heritage status. That is the whole story, as reported.
Mara: Four-wheel drives, a pest and a plan. This desk has never managed all three before lunch.
Anika: ABC News reports an NT museum is in secret talks over European masterworks, and the bid is hanging in the balance as the government weighs up a new Darwin gallery.
Mara: Masterworks in Darwin, in secret. I have never been let in on a secret in Darwin. Or anywhere with a lamp.
Anika: Mara, the government is weighing it up. Nothing is settled.
Mara: I did say settled. In my head it was settled.

Anika: ABC News reports regional post offices face uncertain futures. For decades they have been the heart of most small towns, but licensees are ageing and habits are changing.
Mara: There are fears they could disappear. Fears, not decisions. The outlet was careful, and so will this desk be.
