Mara: Welcome to the Desk. Three stories tonight, and the lightest one goes last, as it always does.
Anika: The Conversation reports on the Albanese-Chalmers relationship, placed within the wider positioning for the succession. It is an analysis, so this is one view of the situation, not a set of facts.
Mara: Succession. In my day that word was for the will and the good cutlery.
Mara: I read the Conversation every week. Mostly I read the headings, which is how I was taught.

Mara: The Guardian's Wednesday briefing reports that the UK's one in, one out asylum deal with France has collapsed. It says the arrangement did little to stop small boat crossings and made them more dangerous.
Anika: That is a serious subject, and we are leaving it straight.
Mara: Agreed, Anika. The desk has nothing to add to that one.
Anika: ABC News reports Powderfinger has added new shows to its 2027 tour, 24 shows across Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Cairns.
Mara: Twenty-four shows. I have been at this desk for thirty years and nobody has booked me for a single one.
Anika: Just to be precise, Mara, Cairns is a long way from the Shed, and this desk is not on any map.
Anika: The lamp has been on since the start of tonight's Desk, so I have noted it in the usual place.
Mara: Then the Shed goes on tour, and the chair goes with it, squeaking all the way to Cairns.
